TO WRITE neg, snake eyes the most aggravating kind movie the kind that shows much potential then becomes unbelievably disappointing its just because this brian depalma film and since hes great director and one whos films are always greeted with least some fanfare and its even because this was film starring icolas cage and since gives brauvara performance this film hardly worth his talents its worse than that its aggravating for the sole reason that its story could much more could totally intelligent and opens with absolutely subtlety that will handled complexly and intensely then one point the movie makes wrong turn that leads the hall fame half-assedness more deservedly the hall fame the eighth-assedness certain circles snake eyes was being advertised kind modern day version kurosawas classic rashomon where crime told from the four different and mean different perspectives and looks though may actually just like this with the opening which might add superb one very very very long steadicam shot meet the protagonist crooked atlantic city detective rick santoro cage and follow him before boxing match talks his cell phone with his wife interupts pay-per-view event chases down gambler enters the arena all pumped for the fight sits down and talks with his bud kevin dunne gary sinise whos character should confused with that actor kevin dunn whos also this and watches happens theres big ame the crowd and thats the secretary defense charles kirkland joel fabiani whos sitting behind rick and who gets shot second after the heavyweight champion lincoln tyler stan shaw knocked out this all happens the opening shot and creates many red herrings and possibilities what happened that opens this scene for close examination and total deconstruction what really happened this film asks and sets this film extremely well for when rick begins question people and get different perspectives the scene and discovers theres very good possibility was conspiracy follow rick trying learn more information also meet woman who was talking kirkland before was shot carla gugino and who flees the scene panic and tries hide from the cops the arena and the adjacent casino/hotel since the cops have blocked off the doors they can get witness takes what happened this all going pretty fine and dandy and its extremely interesting watch then takes one wrong step follow the wrong character and learn the answer the mystery too early and way before rick can find out but thats the worst part its that its the one person you didnt think would because was too obviously supposed the red herring the one you didnt think did because would stupid and cliched that person behind only gets worse the film turns into chase film about half way through the film and since already know what happened cant rely ricks investigation all that interesting its the film ran out the guts really complex and original about third the way and decided just fall back easy way out and that just happens mean that has become less and less credible events become more and more proposterous and the end the film has decided rely the worst offender mysteries like this the deux machina thats where some outside intereference brings the film sudden conclusion and makes everything okay this time its hurricane out-of-control police car and big round ball that adorned the arena what went wrong depalma and the screenwriter david koepp are extremely credible people their respective fields and have been known for bringing life and complexity mysteries such this depalma who idolizes hitchcock death has done many film like this such his masterpiece blow out where movie soundman uses movie elements uncover conspiracy piece piece but granted depalma least makes intriguing watch what with his over-the-top shot set-ups otably the beginning and sequence where the camera pans over top bunch rooms the hotel forgetting anything about boundaries least his direction makes partly for then theres koepp who showed such great ability making characters flaws come life like did depalmas earlier carlitos way film that dove right into the life and past its character and examined him extremely well can write flawed character but his rick santoro seems just half-assed effort hes flawed and can see redemption the story wasnt formulaic scene towards the end where has make fatal decision cheapened the fact that his answer has emotional buildup may well have said the opposite what says would have least gone with what the character was like this the most disappointing kind film because promises intelligence and complexity because promises disection flawed character and perhaps even redemption then pulls the rug from under just were about convinced would able all the way was watching the first half hour couldnt wait see how the mystery would unearthed how many different perspectives hed given and perhaps hed have make choice between whos has believe theres film unfortunately the film has two major deux machinas one the disasterous ending the other about half hour when the film goes into autopilot and becomes stale and recycled piece crap weve seen all too much before but ever from lindo turns out the films best performance the other performers are all adequate what the script asks them except for woodside issacs son colin the performance undirected with the character changing his tone and demeanor accordance with whatever location unfocused performance that should have been reigned and better written first time director andrzej bartkowiak does workmanlike job handling the film having career one the industrys best cinematographers bartkiwiak knows how set his shots and romeo must die does look good but the pacing the film lethargic only coming semblance life during the fight scenes the script eric bernt and john jarrell focused such way that can care about the characters the situations they are the big gambit buying waterfront property facilitate the building sports center for team eedlessly confusing and course the common practice one character being the comic relief the film becomes painfully obvious here anthony anderson allayahs bodyguard maurice has comic timing whatsoever the best things about the film are its fight scenes jet master these intricate physical battles one eeds only see his film fist legend understand that the man without peer the realm martial art combat here jet given the opportunity show off way that lethal weapon jets debut didnt allow unfortunately lot jets fights are aided with computer effects that detract from his ability and precision also romeo must die must oted having the most singularly useless effect ever committed film and that x-ray effect that appears three times during the course the film showing the effect bone crushing blows opponent obviously homage the famed x-ray scene from sonny chibas streetfighter the scenes here are just pointless and interfere with the pacing the film its the film has stopped and video game has been inserted one problem though about the fight scenes those that are familiar with hong kong action know that even though the films are fantasies and are removed from reality any anime cartoon they have internal rhythm them heartbeat speak their choreography the fight scenes hong kong film breath with emotional resonance this created the performance the direction and the editing here romeo must die there staccato every fight scene even though technically adroit and amazing becomes boring the editing both cuts away from battle hand and simple follows set pattern the rhythm monotonous hong kong film has tempo that changes heightening its emotional impact 'rmd limited standard tempo allowing for any emotional content whatsoever fine example this difference can found examining couple jackie chans films watch the restaurant fight from the film rush hour and otice that the context the fight while technically amazing rather flat the framing and cut always help look the warehouse fight from rumble the bronx there you have heartbeat and emotional draw that doesnt let the audience catch its breath the stops and pauses for dramatic effect work perfectly causing the viewer both astounded and flabbergasted here 'romeo must die the fight scenes have more emotional content character than any john wayne barroom brawl jet grand and personable screen presence its shame that his full talents were used full effect here one day filmmakers here the will stop making films the umbers and start embrace the style and emotion that has made hong kong action pictures such commodity until then well left with emotionally hollow product like the replacement killer and currently romeo must die
